Blocked Currency Definition

A blocked currency is primarily used for domestic transactions and is not traded on the Forex. A blocked currency is also referred to as a “nonconvertible currency”. This is because the holder does not have the right to exchange it for a different currency. Blocked currencies are created by governments that wish to control its exchange and trade, without any foreign creditor involvement. It is actually illegal in some countries to attempt to convert a blocked currency .
