Each stock with trades on the Nasdaq has a market maker which is an entity who is responsible for taking trades when no one else will.  This ensures that there is liquidity in the market at all times.  Each market maker has their own ID which shows on the Level 2 quote screen.  Active traders will follow the market maker for clues on the short term direction of the stock.
